This exceptional antique Victorian sterling silver chamber candlestick (chamberstick) has a plain circular, rounded form, in the classic English style.

The plain and large cylindrical capital is encircled with bands of applied moulded decoration.

The silver chamberstick retains the original push fit hallmarked sconce and the original detachable hallmarked snuffer.

The snuffer has a conical form and is surmounted by a simplified ball style finial.

The sconce, snuffer and wax pan of this impressive silver chamberstick are embellished with the contemporary bright cut engraved crest* displaying a demi-lion reguardant gorged holding between its paws a mill-rind.

The wax pan and sconce are encircled with further applied moulded borders to the rims.

This silver chamberstick is fitted with a plain circular fingerpiece with a scrolling thumbpiece.

The underside of the chamberstick bears the retailers mark ‘Garrards, Panton Street, London’.

This impressive chamber candlestick was crafted by the renowned and collectable London silversmith Robert Garrard II of R & S Garrard & Co.

* Upon the balance of probability and without any evidence to the contrary this chamberstick was at one time in the possession of Sir Charles Henry Mills (born 26th April 1830 died 3rd April 1898), the 2nd Baronet of Hillingdon Court in the County of Middlesex prior to creation as Baron Hillingdon, of Camelford House, Park Lane in the County of Middlesex and of Wildernesse in the County of Kent within the Peerage of United Kingdom on the 15th February 1886. Sir Charles was the eldest son of Sir Charles Mills, the 1st Baronet of Hillingdon Court and Emily Cox, daughter of Richard Henry Cox, (a member of the Cox banking family), of Hillingdon House in the County of Middlesex. Prior to his elevation to the peerage, Sir Charles who succeeded his father as the 2nd Baronet in 1872 served as the Member of Parliament for West Kent between the years 1868 – 85 and was both a Deputy Lieutenant and Justice of the Peace for the County of Kent. He married Lady Louisa Isabella Lascelles (died 30th November 1918), the eldest daughter of Henry Lascelles, the 3rd Earl of Harewood on the 25th August 1853. They had six sons and four daughters. He was succeeded by his eldest son, Charles William as the 3rd Baronet and 2nd Baron.

Sadly, the Barony of Hillingdon, together with the Baronetcy of Hillingdon Court fell into extinction upon the death of Patrick Charles Mills (the great grandson of Sir Charles, the 1st Baronet), the 5th Baron and 6th Baronet for want of a male heir in 1982.
