This exceptional antique Victorian sterling silver communion set consists of a chalice, paten and wine jug.

The surface of each ecclesiastical piece is with a fine and impressive bright cut engraved hexadecagon sunburst motif with the initials 'ihs'*, in addition to a scalloped border accented with trefoil designs.

The chalice has a circular rounded form onto a quatrefoil decorated knopped pedestal and circular spreading foot.

The interior of the chalice retains the original gilding.

The paten has a plain circular form with a central circular well.

The impressive wine jug has a circular tapering form to a cylindrical neck; both the body and the neck are further embellished with fret band ornamentation.

The jug bears a cast and applied rope twist decorated handle and is fitted with the original hallmarked sterling silver and cork push fit stopper, surmounted with an impressive cross pattée* decoration finial.

The communion set is fitted to the original hinged leatherette box with velvet and satin interior.

* IHS comes from the first three letters of the Latinised version 'IHSOUS' of the Greek spelling 'ΙΗΣΟΥΣ', which translates as the Holy Name of Jesus. Many perceive these initials to delineate the Latin phrase 'Iesus Hominum Salvator' meaning 'Jesus the Savior of all Men', which is not historically accurate.

** A cross pattee (pattée, patty) is also known as a cross formée.
