Antique Victorian Sterling Silver Locking Tea Caddy
Offered by AC Silver
Each side of the box is embellished with impressive bright cut engraved scrolling leaf strapwork decoration accented with floral sprays, festoons and suspended pendant motifs.
The sides of the box are further ornamented with a paralleling border accented with circular motifs with a central cross pattee to the lower corners.
The decoration to the anterior surface of the box incorporates the contemporary engraved inscription 'Presented to Mrs G. H. Barnes on her birthday by a few attached friends as an humble testimony of her kind, generous and hospitatble qualities, Feby 5th 1861'.
Each shaped corner is embellished with an impressive and decorative applied spiralling column.
The body of this sterling silver caddy is supported by an embossed fluted swept base.
This tea caddy retains the original hallmarked hinged cover featuring further embossed fluted decoration to the rim.
The panelled surface of the cover is ornamented with further bright cut engraved scrolling strapwork decoration incorporating a vacant oval shaped cartouche to one side.
The cover is surmounted with an impressive cushion shaped finial embellished with bright cut engraved decoration reflecting the same design to that of the cover.
The caddy is fitted with the original hallmarked locking mechanism; the lock is not operational.
This impressive antique Victorian caddy retains the original hallmarked internal divider, as to be expected with such a large caddy.
This impressive divider secures to the underside with a large vertical pin with a fingerpiece/loop to the upper edge.
This impressive locking tea caddy was crafted by the renowned London silversmith Joseph Angell II.

There is a slight depression to one corner of the finial, this does not detract from the aesthetically pleasing appearance of the piece.
The bright cut engraved decoration is very crisp.
Full hallmarks struck to the underside of the caddy and part hallmarks to the interior of the cover and surface of the locking mechanism case are all very clear.
Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this example of antique silverware.
