Frans Xaver Bergman, the famed bronzier renowned for his beautiful cold painted works, has been attributed as the maker of this charming group of four dogs. These small dog figures are at once masterfully cast and painted, and there is a soft reddish sheen on their coats which adds wonderfully to the naturalistic feel of the figures. Each dog is shown sitting but with an alert expression on its face.

The dogs have been decorated using the cold painting technique, a labour-intensive, highly-skilled process which was pioneered by Bergman and his foundry in the late 19th Century in Vienna.
