A fine wheelback Windsor armchair with decorative full height one-piece central back splat. Centre of the wheel inlaid with a small roundel, which is an unusual feature.

Nice warm colour and good patina.

Back splat and spindles in fruitwood. Hoops and curved underarm supports in ash. Elm seat. Single ring turned beech legs, connected by H stretcher.

It was very common for country chairs like this to be made from a mixture of woods, each chosen for their particular strengths and properties. Fruitwood was chosen for the spindles and splat because of its attractive grain and richness of colouring. Ash was used for the hoops as it could be bent well, and would retain the bend. Elm was always used for the seats of Windsor chairs as it was easy to obtain the large thick planks need from big elm trees, and the large swirls and patterns in the grain added an attractive dimension to the seat. Beech was very strong and easily turned, and therefore ideal for the legs.

Attributed to the Thames Valley region.

Seat height 17.25 inches (44 cm).
