The present work was commissioned by the Aviation department of Shell Petroleum. During the mid 20th century Shell commissioned a number of prominent artists and illustrators to produce paintings to be used as illustrations in their many publications such as calendars, guides, school wallcharts and for general advertising purposes. Shell were early supporters of many young promising artists such as Edward Bawden, Rex Whistle, Richard Eurich, Tristram Hillier, Stanley Badmin and John Nash.
