William Hemsley was the son of an architect who was born in London. He initially trained to become an architect teaching himself to paint in his spare time, before becoming a professional artist. He travelled to Europe visiting Germany and Holland where he painted scenes of everyday folk. He specialised in painting works on a smaller scale, which included children either at play or helping with chores such as in this lovely example. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and the British Institution. He also exhibited at Suffolk Street where he was a member, later becoming vice president. A number of his works can be found at various art galleries and museums including the Atkinson Art Gallery, Victoria Art Gallery, Bath, Williamson Art Gallery & Museum, Freens Art Gallery, Welcome Library and the Leeds Museum.
The painting is housed in a new, English made gilt frame which is in excellent condition.
