The pair of paintings made in temper on paper, belongs to the genre of eighteenth-century views, particularly to the one in which painters ideally reconstructed spaces by interposing buildings arbitrarily.
In the works analyzed, a variety of architectures belonging to the classical world are arranged in a sort of imaginary garden: columns, trabeations, capitals and sculptures define the visual space in which exuberant fountains stand out.The rediscovery of ancient ruins was an iconographic theme that had a considerable success in the 18th century, especially from the archaeological discoveries of Pompeii (1738) and Herculaneum (1748).
Comparing the style and the compositive similarities, the couple is to be referred to a painter belonging to the circle of Jean-Baptiste Lallemand (1710 ca.-1803 ca.), a French landscape painter. After his training in Paris, he moved for 14 years in Rome.During this permanence, he visited Naples and met the french painters Etienne Parrocel, Claude-Joseph Vernet and Jean Barbault.
