A curious creature the walrus appears to be the connecting link between the mammals of the land and those of the sea. Known as the sea horse to the whalers of the 18th and 19th centuries the walrus uses his tusks not only as a means of defense, but to obtain food and in mounting ice floes when the shore is not accessible. The walrus has no sharp incisors like the seal and there is considerable diversity in the shape, size and length of their tusks. The nostrils are placed on the upper portion of the snout through which it breathes in, breathing out through the mouth as it dips its head below the surface blowing up the water into spray resembling the spout of a whale.
