PIETRO BAZZANTI (1842-81)
ARIADNE AND THE PANTHER
White Carrara Marble
Florence, Italy
Circa 1870.
The well carved figure group shows Ariadne reclining naked on the back of the panther, on an integral naturalistic plinth, after the model by Johan Heinrich von Dannecker (1758-1841).
The present group demonstrates a softer modelling than in the original by von Dannecker and depicts Ariadne in a rather more languorous pose.
Signed on the reverse of the plinth 'P. Bazzanti, Florence'.
