Very unusual Arts & Crafts silver tea caddy with carved ivory handle. This wonderful piece was made by a lady silversmith named Aileen Faul and was hallmarked in London in 1937. The main body of the piece, is decorated with engraved astrological figures. The scene seems to show the Crab (Cancer) catching hold of the tail of the centaur figure representing Sagittarius. We suspect this may have been a unique, commissioned piece - perhaps to celebrate a forthcoming engagement or marriage. The handle has been carved with images of a goat (?) and a ram (?) .... might these be for Aries and Capricorn??
We wondered if the handle might have been older than the caddy but when it was unscrewed for cleaning there are two features carved into the underside. One is of the face of an imp or similar creature and the other is a circular monogram which seems to contain the letters A and F - presumably for Aileen Faul.
Excellent condition. No repairs or damage.
