Born in Alnwick, Northumberland, Phelan Gibb was the first British artist of his kind and a little ahead of his time.Having studied in Edinbugh, Paris, Antwerp and Munich he exhibited in group exhibitions at Salon d'Automme, the Allied Artists' Association as well as the Wertheim, Alpine and Redfern Galleries and also in New York.

Phelan Gibb was born in Alnwick, Northumberland, the son of an artist. He studied at Newcastle, Edinburgh, Paris (under J.P. Laurens), Antwerp and Munich. He was based in Paris for twenty-five years before returning to England, and was thought of highly by Gertrude Stein. Gibb exhibited at the Salon d'Automne (SociƩtaire 1909), the A.A.A., London, and the Katz Gallery, New York. His first solo exhibition was held in 1911 at the Baillie Gallery, London and at the Bernheim-Jeune, Paris, in 1913.
