William Logsdail was born in Lincoln on 25 May 1859.
He attended the Lincoln School of Art, and studied under Edward R. Taylor and also studied in Antwerp with his friend Frank Bramley at the École des Beaux-Arts, under Michel Marie Charles Verlat. During his early career he painted landscapes and genre scenes including large London views which were a great success; three being bought by the Chantrey Bequest. He exhibited 96 works at the Royal Academy from 1877 and at the New Gallery, Grosvenor Gallery, New English Art Club and the Society of British Artists. Although he was not a member of the Newlyn School, his plein-air style and rustic subjects show that he was influenced by their ideas.
In 1892 Logsdail met Mary Ashman of Necton, near Swaffham, Norfolk and they married in May the same year and had three children. Logsdail travelled with his family visiting Venice, France and Italy to paint the landscapes and panoramic views, spending many years away. After such a trip they returned to England, settling in West Kensington, London where he painted a costume portrait of his daughter Mary, which was well received. This marked the beginning of a period of portrait painting for Logsdail, who was offered so many commissions that he was able to pick and choose his sitters.
In 1912, he was elected a member of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters.
In 1922, the family moved to Noke, near Islip, Oxfordshire where Logsdail stayed until his death on 3 September 1944 aged 85.
