A portrait miniature of a young officer wearing a blue jacket with white frogging and a red collar, a black stock and a frilled cravat. He has fair curling hair and brown eyes. The background to the miniature is a thundery sky with red and dark clouds gathering.

George Chinnery was born in London and studied at the Royal Academy Schools. After briefly living in Dublin he sailed to Madras and worked in Calcutta in 1802, it is possible this miniature was painted there.

Watercolour on ivory in an oval gilt metal replacement frame with plaited hair to reverse.
