Additional Information:

The 42nd have always been the most famous of the kilted highland regiments. Known as the Black Watch from the time of their raising in the mid 18th century by the darkness of their tartan (probably) they served in almost all of the great actions/battles of the late 18th and right through the 19th century. Black Watch portraits are fairly rare For another example of miniature of an officer by Dudman, cf Foskett, Collecting Miniatures, p. 193 plate 44C
