Alexandra Danilova trained at the Russian Imperial Ballet School in Leningrad, now St. Petersburg. She left Russian in 1924 with George Balanchine and joined Sergei Diaghilev's Ballets Russes. She then danced with Colonel de Basil's Ballets Russes 1933-38 and as prima ballerina with the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo 1938-52. She was an immensely versatile dancer whose wit and vivacity made her extremely popular with ballet audiences.

The present watercolour shows Danilova dancing ' Odette ' in Swan Lake Act II. In this performance she was partnered by Paul Petroff in the role of ' Prince Siegfried '.
