Léonide Massine was born in Moscow 9th August 1896. He succeeded Vaslav Nijinsky as the principal dancer and choreographer of Sergei Diaghilev's Ballets Russes. In 1933 Massine created the world's first symphonic ballet, Les Présages, using the work of Tchaikovsky's Fifth Symphony. Le Beau Danube, set to the music of Johann Strauss, was created and choreographed by Massine for the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo in the 1930s.
In 1939 Eve Guthrie painted this watercolour of Léonide Massine in Le Beau Danube as 'one of the most famous moments in ballet- The Hussar Remembers, the opening chords of the waltz begin'. It was reproduced as an illustration for Pictures from the Ballet, published by Robert Grant and Son Ltd,Edinburgh 1945.
