Baron Thorneycroft was a Conservative politician and MP. He was educated at Eton School and the Royal Military Academy and became a Member of Parliament in 1938. He was appointed Chancellor of the Exchequer (1957-58) and Chairman of the Conservative Party (1975-81) under Margaret Thatcher. He was raised to the peerage after he lost his seat in the 1966 General Election and became Baron Thorneycroft of Dunston and the County of Stafford. Like Sir Winston Churchill before him, in his spare time he became a very proficient painter, exhibiting at the Royal Academy on a few occasions and holding his own exhibitions. He also wrote a book on technique for " The Amateur Painter". He died in 1994.

This painting is gouache and is housed behind glass in an over-glazed gold bespoke built frame. The reverse of the backboard is inscribed with the title which in full is "Chinese Ceremonial Food Vessel 10th Century BC" together with the artist's name. It also carries a small label with the name "David Lidderdale", which may refer to the MP of that name. Overal, including frame, it measures 21.5(h) by 17.5(w) inches. If a purchaser were to require this to be delivered through the post then for safety reasons the glass would need to be removed.
Not examined out of frame but appears to be in very good condition. The frame which has been specially designed for the painting is also in very good condition
