Item Literature

The Bolan was built for Thomas & John Brocklebank in 1882 at a weight of 2058 tons. By 1889 she was listed as missing.
Founded in 1801 as Thos. & Jno. Brocklebank, Whitehaven, with one sailing ship, the company traded mostly with coal. With the abolition of the Hon. East India Company's trading monopoly to India in 1813, Brocklebank entered the India trade, which became its mainstay field of operation; a London to China Treaty Ports service began in 1858. In 1819, the company moved from Whitehaven to Liverpool which became its terminus port.
Lai Fong, a China Trade ship painter active between 1890 and 1910, emigrated from Hong Kong to Calcutta where he became a leading pier head painter.
