Denise Mannoni was born in Nîmes, France in 1918. After spending an idyllic early life on various French colonial islands including Madagascar, the family moved back to France in 1948. She continued to pursue her passion for painting, despite the initial shock of finding the French countryside very prosaic after the exoticism of the Indian Ocean.

1952 saw her settling in Paris with her husband and family, which enabled her to pursue her painting with more intensity, and she became influenced by Picasso, Kandinsky and Klee. In 1964 she had her first exhibition in Paris at the Galerie Michel Boutin to great critical acclaim, and by 1967 her life long collaboration with the Galerie Valerie Schmitt commenced, and led to a series of successful exhibitions.

Denise Mannoni’s earlier paintings in the 1950’s were characterised by geometric composition using strongly delineated, small shapes rather in the manner of mosaics or cloisonné; in the 1960’s her quest for the ‘essence of things’ created paintings which were more lyrical and sinuous, with the juxtaposition of simple forms and objects forming a lyrical harmony. A recurring theme throughout was always the influence of the life and memories of her beloved islands.
