John Duvall

Ipswich Artist. In 1855 Duvall is recorded as an art teacher, John illustrated the Suffolk Horse Society’s Stud Book that Col. Barlow commissioned him to paint. ‘Suffolk Show’ in Christchurch Park, Ipswich 1868 established him as an animal painter. Duvall painted many portraits of hunters, racehorses, hunting scenes, highland scenes with ponies and ploughing scenes. His patrons included the Duke of Hamilton and The Prince of Wales.
Duvall travelled widely in England and visited Scotland, Wales and Jersey and exhibited regularly at the Ipswich Art Society, Suffolk Street, and the Royal Academy, 77 work’s overall. His work, though not in the top rank, is very competent and pleasing and not to be over looked. He signed but seldom dated his work. He died in Ipswich.
