David Tindle was a painter of interiors with figures, still-lifes and landscapes. Born in Huddersfield, he studied at Coventry School of Art from 1945-1947. He taught at Hornsey College of Art and the Byam Shaw School of Art 1959-1974, and at the Royal College of Art 1972–1983, becoming a fellow in 1981. He then taught at Oxford University (as Ruskin Master of Drawing from 1985–1987 & as a fellow of Edmund Hall)
Tindle’s painting shows a care for texture & arrangement and is delicately executed. He frequently works in egg tempera and his landscape & outdoor paintings are often characterized by a misty luminosity.
From the early 1950’s he exhibited in Royal Academy Summer Exhibition shows and had regular solo exhibitions at the Piccadilly Gallery. Retrospectives of his work were held at The City Art Gallery, Coventry in 1957 & at the Central Museum and Art Gallery, Northampton, in 1972.
He was elected RA in 1979, and won the Johnson Wax Award in 1983.
