Enteric fever also killed many thousands. Their opponents were also excellent horsemen and marksmen. This was recognised at home and is why these presentations were made.
The relatively large carriage clocks were of a special design, being commissioned from Elkingtons in London. The cases were made of oxidised silver and brass and hall-marked for 1901.To the top is a reproduction of the Helensburgh coat of arms , with South Africa and 1899-1901 0n either side . At the foot of the dial is an Argyll and Sutherland Highlander, a field gun and an Imperial Yeoman. To the bottom is an attractively shaped gilded plaque which reads:-
Private W. Mc Kinlay,
In recognition of Patriotic Service in
The South African Campaign
Helensburgh. June 1901.
The whole of the dial is executed in relief. The four columns have raised floral decoration and further decoration is applied around the top and bottom of the case, which rests on decorative feet. The top panel of the case is glazed and it has an attractively shaped handle. The sides of the case are also glazed.
The gong striking movement has a platform with lever escapement and a circular white enamelled dial with black arabic numerals and gilded hands.
A copy of the local newspapers account of the presentation is available on request.
