Mary Magdalene penitent

mid seventeenth century
oil on canvas

Measurements (cm): 64 x 50,
with frame: 80 x 66

the magnificent portrait in question, dating from the mid-seventeenth century, is Mary Magdalene, immortalized in the moment penance with one hand while supporting the ointment jar: typical iconographic attribute, recalls the time when she washed Christ's feet with her tears, and perfumed them with precious oil.

Mary Magdalene is depicted with long hair usually loose, that characterize the youthful beauty, and with the pained look up and spent, to empathize with the pain Savior. The apparent high quality of execution of this table, supported by a surprising movement of the hands, it suggests fatherhood to a talented painter belonging to the circle of Guido Reni (Bologna 1579-1642).

This iconographic subject quickly spread at the time of the against-reform, as opposed to the Protestant doctrine that denies the validity of the sacrament of penance.

The school Reni specialized in performing the holy penitent: the painting is a typical example of late classicism, to the balanced composition and the range of refined colors illuminated by intense chiaroscuro.

The paint is in good condition, and comes with a beautiful lacquered and gilt frame.
