Jean Rigaud was born in Bordeaux in 1912. His father was the artist Pierre Gaston Rigaud, who initially encouraged his interest in painting. Jean Rigaud went on to study at the École des Beaux Arts in Paris, and refined his impressionistic style whilst studying at the Atelier Andre Dewambez.

Jean Rigaud specialised in marine subjects, European street scenes and, combining the two themes, Venice. He had 54 one man exhibitions between 1938 and 1976, including an exhibition every other year at the renowned Parisian gallery Galerie Durand-Ruel, from 1956 – 1974. He also exhibited regularly at leading Paris salons including the Salon de la Marine, Salon du Dessin et de la Peinture a l’Eau, and the Société National des Beaux Arts. He also exhibited in New York, Strasbourg and Casablanca, winning many awards, including the Prix d’Or at the International Exhibition in Paris in 1937.

His paintings are held in many public and private collections worldwide. Immediately after his death in Paris in 1999, the Musée National de la Marine held a retrospective of his work, which received great critical acclaim.
