Wonderful boulle serpentine Tea Caddy with engraved brass and red tortoiseshell, the back is veneered in Ebonised pear wood. The interior is lined with a pale red silk and has its superb removable porcelain Tea Caddies and Sugar container, each one has blue scrolling enamelling with exquisite gilded decoration.

This fabulous French tea caddy comes with a fully working lock & tasselled key.

The "Boulle" name comes from the famous André-Charles Boulle who was made famous for veneering furniture with marquetry of tortoiseshell, brass and pewter. Although he did not invent the technique, Boulle mastered the art of this complex marquetry and lent his name to its common name: boulle work. Boulle also specialised in floral marquetry in both stained and naturally coloured woods. Many of his designs are illustrated in a book of engravings published around 1720.
