Brian Bennett was born in Buckinghamshire in 1927 and took an honours degree in History at Magdalen College, Oxford. He attended art classes at the Ruskin School of Art in Oxford and at Regent Street Polytechnic in London. He has exhibited at a wide range of venues during his career, including the Royal Academy, Royal Institute of Oil Painters, New English Art Club and the Royal Society of Marine Artists, to name but a few. He was elected a Member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters in 1973 and for a while was its President. He is now a Fellow. He has won the Stanley Grimm prize at the Institute's annual exhibition on several occasions. In addition to his exhibiting career, he has also been Director of Art at Plymouth College and then Head of Art at Berkhamsted School for over thirty years. He has also written and illustrated several books. Brian Bennett's love of the Chilterns has led him to produce a large body of work that explores views across the area at different times of year.

This painting is an oil on canvasboard and overall, including frame, measures 14.5(h) by 18.5(w) inches. It is housed in its original frame of gold rim, grey green insert and canvas covered slip. There is a slight indentation mark to the upper left of the grey green insert. A certificate of authenticity on the reverse indicates that it was originally sold through the Hawker Gallery of Amersham on 19/11/99, priced at £475. It is a very typical example of his work showing an expansive landscape as seen from a low viewpoint through wild grasses.
