A nineteenth century gouache of the merchant brig "Sisters" seen before the Doge's Palace, Venice with other visiting vessels and gondoliers plying for trade.
Signed and dated Gio. Luzzo 1846, within a period maple veneered frame.
Most likely the founding father of the Luzzo family of ship portrait artists, Giovanni (John) Luzzo is recorded as working between 1850 and 1880 in Venice. His ships are usually depicted under full sail within a Venetian scene and very accurately drawn.
A similar work by this artist is to be found in the Peabody Essex Museum no.0885 "Bark JOHN WESLEY of Searsport Leaving Venice"
