A highly respected Bristol artist, Ehlers was the founder of the Bristol Savages Art Society in 1894 where he invited his fellow Bristol based artists to spend a friendly evening in his studio to work and talk. By 1904 this led to the official founding of the Bristol Savages who to this day still hold weekly meetings. In 1905 the first exhibition of paintings was held.
