London, for the author 1823.
Britton's book on William Beckford's extravagant Gothic mansion, published almost contemporaneously with John Rutter's more celebrated Delineations of Fonthill, is illustrated by a series of accurate engraved plates from drawings by George Cattermole, Henry Shaw and others, and these are useful additions to the illustrations provided by Rutter. Britton's text is perhaps most interesting for the light it sheds on the book's publishing history and on Britton's own attitude to Beckford and to Fonthill. The present copy is one of five hundred small paper copies (there were also six folio copies and three hundred large paper ones). BAL Cat 416. Millington p.109.
