A Fine Bronze of the Pugilist After the Antique Roman Original in the Museo Nazionale Romano
Late 19th Century

Size: 50cm high, 34cm wide, 21cm deep – 19¾ ins high, 13½ ins wide, 8¼ ins deep
Provenance: Ex German Private collection

After the original marble found in the Quirinal in Rome in 1885, this bronze depicts a heavily muscled and powerful boxer with his hands bound around and protected with leather straps ready for the fight, naked and looking to the crowd of spectators in the arena.
Antique sporting figures were always a popular subject, as was the marble group of the wrestlers discovered in Rome in 1583, and bronze casts of the original would have been quickly produced to satisfy the demand from tourists on the grand tour.
