The original objective of the award was to encourage ship owners to establish regular ties with the Port of Montreal and to have their vessels take on the St. Lawrence River earlier each year
The award has been given out for 175 years and is still presented today
This particular cane was presented in 1933: -
Date - April 14th 1933
Ship – Boston City
Nationality – British
Master – L. H. Millidge
Owner and / or Agent – Furness Withy and Co
The Actual Inscription reads:-
“Presented by the Harbour Commissioners of Montreal to Captain L.H. Millidge, Master of S/S Boston City.
First transatlantic vessel in port. April 14th 1933.”
On the end of the cane is the Harbour Commissioners of Montreal’s seal, containing the crown and an anchor
