Rupert Shephard was born on 12th February 1909 in Islington. He worked in oils, watercolours, etching and lithography. He studied at the Slade School from 1926-29 under Henry Tonks. He exhibited with the London Group from 1929 and also at the Royal Academy, the New English Art Club and the National Portrait Gallery. He taught at the Central School of Arts and Crafts from 1946-48, and was Professor of Art at the Michaelis School of Art in Capetown 1948-63.

His works can be found in numerous public collections, including the Imperial War Museum, the National Portrait Gallery and the British Museum.
