backed with further card, set into gilded square gesso frame
Alexander Prole was commissioned Captain in the 25th Foot 16th July 1800, and went on Half Pay in 1803 or 1804. The 25th Foot passed through Portsmouth in August 1803 on their way from Gibraltar to Ireland, so that is probably when Prole had his silhouette taken by Buncombe, just before retirement. The epaulette on his left shoulder and the small silver grenade securing the loop on his cocked hat and it's white plume all distinguish Prole as the Captain of the 25th Foot's Grenadier Company.
