Henry was the second son of John Peachey (1749-1816) of West Dean Park, Sussex and Hester Elizabeth Jennings (d.1837). He married the Honorable Anne Maria Louisa Irby (1792-1870) on 21 October 1817; the marriage did not produce any children.

In 1811, Henry captained the HMS 'Hecate' during the British invasion of the Dutch colony of Java; his naval service during the Napoleonic Wars was rewarded with a promotion to Post-Captain on 7 August 1812. He had previously been stationed as a Lieutenant on the 'Cornwallis' and later became the commanding officer of the 'Malacca'.
