Carlo Cignani
(Bologna, 1628 - Forlì, 1719) workshop

Bacchus as a child surrounded by putti

oil on canvas

(cm.) 57 x 46
box 70 x 59

Provenance: Private Collection

This very interesting painting with the mythological theme, joins the pictorial examples of Carlo Cignani (Bologna, 1628 - Forlì, 1719), both compositional and stylistic characteristics, and for the representation of the subject.

The Cignani, a classical painter and student of Albani, with a strong spirit of innovation, had a flourishing studio. It is therefore plausible that our painting, which shows many similarities with other embodiments of the painter, was executed in his workshop and under his supervision.

It should be noted, for example, the particular performance of contrasts between the light and the shadows that embellish embodied, characteristic of the painter.

The painting is dated to the end of the seventeenth century, while its production Cignani moved to Forlì, to meet the commitment of decorating the dome of the cathedral.

The composition is structured around the figure of the little Bacchus, crowned by grape leaves and bunches of grapes, surrounded by putti that animate the rest.

Behind one of them hands him a bunch of grapes, another with feminine features (probably Erigone, his future wife), squeezed by hand the grapes, whose juice is sipped by a third. In the top left a pair of Bacchini will fill a tank and pressing the grapes.

This particular representation of putti often recurs in the works of the Bolognese painter, as in the paintings of the "Bacchus and Erigone children", housed in the Civic Museum in Pesaro and the Schloss Wilhelmshöhe Museum, Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister in Kassel in Germany.
