Carrere & Hastings were, along with McKim Mead & White, and Richard Morris Hunt, the most eminent architects of America's Gilded Age, and, with over 100 projects to their credit built between 1895 to 1924, they were one of the most prolific. They were responsible for some of the most lavish homes ever designed in America and also for some of the most important and prominent buildings for government, business, and cultural institutions. In its almost 30 years of existence, the firm designed houses for the Astors, The Paynes and the Whitneys, the duPonts, the Harrimans, the Scribners, the Goulds, the Winthrops and the Fricks (that house is now the Frick Museum). In addition, they made extensive renovations to the U.S. Capitol, and designed the Senate Office Building, the House Office Building, and the Carnegie Institute in Washington.
