Batavia (Indonesia), late 17th century. Ebony wood. Dimensions: 82.5 cm. / 32.5 in. high, 52 cm. / 20.5 in. wide, 43 cm. / 17 in. deep.

A low side chair carved with ornate naturalistic scrollwork patterns; the top-rail centred with a lotus flower and the face of an Eastern deity, the uprights carved with rosettes and crowned with two mythical lions, the later seat cushion upholstered with a red and white striped textile, the lower frame below seat consisting of twisting spindles.
Good. Please note, this chair has undergone sensitive restoration, probably in the 19th Century, to add the cushion (rather than a cane seat), and it has later strengthening rods under each stretcher.
