Anthony of Padua (born Fernando Martins de Bulhões1195 - 1231), also known as Anthony of Lisbon, was a Portuguese Catholic Priest and friar of the Fransiscan Order. Although he died in Padua, Italy, he was born to a wealthy family in Lisbon. He was noted by his contemporaries for his forceful preaching and expert knowledge of scripture and became known as the most celebrated of the followers of St Francis of Assissi. He is the patron saint of Padua and many places in Portugal and former countries of the former Portuguese Empire. He is also the saint of recovery of lost items or people. He was canonised by Pope Gregory 1X in 1232, at Spoleto, Italy, less than one year after his death.
