Anglo/French Oak carved panel, circa 1530 depicting a man’s head at a Gothic arched and cusped window. The carving of the man’s face is in quite high relief and very cleverly even compresses the chin to give the illusion that it is squashed against the window ledge. As well as foliate ornamentation to the Gothic arching, the roof is shown with beautifully carved shingles. All in all, this is a truly charming piece. Clearly the right hand edge of the timber was sapwood, and several hundred years’ ago it was attacked by woodworm. However, this infestation is now completely dead, and it seems appropriate to keep it in this condition as it is part of the story of its existence. There is a split which has had a dowelled and glued repair.
