Rare, substantial and impressive early French Oak carved panel circa 1500. It depicts the Christogram, or sacred monogram, which was a common abbreviation at that time, of the name for Jesus in Greek. It comes from the words for the Greek letters that were iota for “i”, eta for “h”, and sigma for “s”, which were the first three letters for the name Jesus in that language. As usual with this symbolism the three letters are in intertwined Gothic script, however, what makes this particular panel rare is the clever use of additional iconographical meaning. This is achieved by the morphing of the “S” into a serpent, and the way the “H” terminates in a cross, which could be interpreted as the representation of Jesus as good triumphing over evil. It is highly reminiscent of the decoration found in the marginalia of medieval illuminated manuscripts. The quality of the workmanship is apparent by the enhancement of the stippled background making a contrast to the sharp teeth of the serpent, and the detailed scaling of its back.
