This bust is a unique, highly inventive and finely carved Art Deco depiction of Apollo, Greek god of music, poetry and prophesy. The head is crowned with a winged dove and laurel leaves, which are traditional attributes of Apollo. The creator, Jean-Louis Chorel, was a French sculptor of the early 20th century who began his training in Paris at the end of the 19th century at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He soon returned to his native Lyon and executed a number of important commissions there, including the monument to Joan of Arc in Lyon (erected in 1928) and, in the same city, the Pieta at the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière (1926).
