Artist Moritz Baumann is Swiss and has spent time in the Alps since he was a child. As an English undergraduate at Oxford University he attended summer painting schools at the Slade and St Martin’s. Baumann painted his first mountain picture in 1997 and has subsequently specialised in this genre, producing work that is noteworthy for its purity of vision.
In his studio Baumann works from his own and found photographs, using acrylics on birch plywood. The quick drying nature of the medium and the grain of the wood (which is left as a visible ground) both suit his approach to application. He pairs each of his paintings with a carefully selected antique frame which he sees as a part of the artwork and an expression of his reverence for each of his individual paintings.
