Casimir Geibel was a genre, historical and portrait painter born in Kreuznach, Germany on 12 January 1839. His son Carl Geibel (b.1877) was also a painter and lithographer. From 1863, he studied at the Weimar Art School under Arthur Georg von Ramberg (1819- 1875), Ferdinand Pauwels (1830-1904) and Albert Brendel (1827- 1895).
He exhibited at the Berlin Academy as well as in Dresden, Hamburg and Vienna between 1866 and 1887. By the 1870’s, he had started producing highly detailed genre scenes containing figures set against a landscape. Many of his paintings depict groups of people involved in a celebration such as Harvest Festivals. Geibel died in Weimar on 22 May 1896.
Examples of his work can be found in private and public art collections including the Kupfer Museum and the Witt Library.
The painting is housed in a new English made gilt frame which is in excellent condition.
