Father of the great painting dynasty including Leon and Gustave De Smet who were two of his sons.
Jules run a successful decorative painting studio in Ghent, Belgium where he and his sons specialized in decorating shops, hotels, restaurants and fairground attractions.
He was a multitalented man who recognised his son’s talents and sent them both to art school.
Gustave and Leon were to become a major force in early 20th Century art.
As well as painting canvases for his own pleasure, Jules was a very keen photographer.
By the time this work was painted in 1917, Belgium and Ghent were in the midst of the fighting and there was little call for the decoration work their studio created, so Jules had turned more to painting pictures.
With his sons in the army and surrounded by the horrors of war, it seems that Jules sought the peace and tranquillity they would have known before the conflict, as can be seen clearly in this painting.
It seems, Jules was influenced by the technique and style that his sons were developing and in particular Leon’s work, for which this piece could easily be mistaken.
Oil paintings by Jules are extremely rare and it would be fascinating to know if the style of this painting was something he had developed before his sons had finished the art education.
