Charles Dening was an architect who trained and practised in Bristol. His designs were first influenced by the Arts and Crafts style and then by the Georgian Revival. He also designed communal buildings, including swimming baths and some enclosures for Bristol Zoo. He was a Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects. However, throughout his career he had a great love of painting. He was elected to the Royal West of England Academy and was its Honorary Secretary and Artist's Chairman for a time. He also exhibited at the Royal Institute of Oil Painters and Royal Institute of Watercolour Painters and was a member of the Bristol Savages. He wrote and published "Old Inns of Bristol", which he illustrated with his own sketches.

This painting is an oil on canvasboard laid down on panel. It is housed in a white painted distressed strip frame with gold inner.
