Charles Hinton married Anne Jacson in 1709 in St Werburgh’s in Derby. He died just a year later in Staffordshire without any children. In his will he bequeathed a house in St James’ to his wife. This portrait is probably by an English hand influenced by the large oil portraits of Sir Godfrey Kneller (1646-1723), the leading portraitist of the period. Interestingly, the artist has also recorded the dramatic landscape that surrounds Staveley, part of the Lake District in Cumbria.
