“Shared News” is an offbeat and finely painted picture, depicting an elderly man reading a paper with his friend the donkey looking over his shoulder. This is an excellent example of the work of London painter Charles Hunt.
Born in 1829 in Kensington London, he was to later have a large family and two of his sons were later to become well known painters in their own right, Edgar (1876-1955) and Walter (1860-1940). He frequently exhibited at private galleries until1846. It was not until he was sixty years old that he presented paintings to the Royal Academy of London. Charles also exhibited at the Royal Society of British Artists and as he moved into later life began painting scenes not only incorporating children, but country scenes, often with gypsies and with animals. Painting right until his death in 1900, he latterly became well known for farmyard scenes with animals, which of course his son Edgar took over the mantra of, to become one of the most famous animal painters of the day.
Excellent. The painting has been lightly cleaned, old re-lining.
With W H Patterson, Albermale St, London; thence to a private collection.
