Defining Collections - A superb Charles II olive oyster chest, circa 1670-85

The rectangular cross grain moulded top with well-chosen hand cut olive oysters are carefully laid in geometric patterns, incorporating roundels and corners arcs all banded in holly. Similarly, the two short over three long graduating drawers, divided by cross-grain mouldings are decorated in book-matched oyster in a quadrant fashion.

We can date the chest to circa 1670-85. When dating a piece, you have to look at all areas but inevitably, it comes down to the construction. The drawers are finely lined in oak with through and mitred dovetails of stage one construction, thus running on the drawer bottoms. The locks are long and of puddled steel. The carcus is of deal and mitred dovetailed.

It is worth noting that the three bun feet across the front is an extremely rare feature and original to this chest.
