An early English sterling silver flat lidded tankard with the ribbed and engraved decoration popular at the end of the 17th century. Very large and impressive. To the front there is an engraved armorial within a large cartouche with plumage style decoration. Weight 1057 grams, 33.9 troy ounces. Contains 3 pints. Height 19 cms. Spread 24 cms. Diameter of top 13.5 cms. London 1678. Maker John Sutton.
This substantial antique silver tankard is in very good condition with no signs of damage or restoration. The silver marks on both lid and body are clear and easy to read. There is a matching maker’s mark on the handle. The dent on the handle is quite large but it occurs where the thumb piece meets the handle when the lid is open. Later armorial. Please note that this item is not new and will show moderate signs of wear commensurate with age. Reflections in the photograph may detract from the true representation of this item.
